October Birthstones

Modern - Opal & Tourmaline   Traditional - Tourmaline     Mystical - Jasper*

Tourmaline belongs to a complex family of aluminum borosilicates.  It can be a variety of colors including green, blue (indicolite), violet, yellow, brown, pink or red (rubelite) depending on its mix with iron, magnesium, or other various metals.

*

Rubelite, which varies from red to violet to pink is perhaps the most valuable because of its beauty and rarity. The name comes from the Latin word rubellus which means reddish.

*

Tourmaline may even vary in colors within a single stone, such as the "watermelon tourmaline" (red and green) usually seen in slices.

*

The name Tourmaline is from turmali, an ancient Sinhalese word for "mixed color precious stone".

Tourmaline is formed as prismatic, vertically striated crystals which are uniquely triangular in cross-section. They may be long and slender, or thick and columnar.

*

Ninety-five percent of all Tourmaline is black (or sometimes a very dark blue that appears black), also called Schorl.  The name dates back to the pre-1400's where it came from a town in Saxony, Germany, where Black Tourmaline was found in nearby tin mines.

Tourmaline has the ability to become electrically charged simply by heating (pyroelectricity) or rubbing (piezoelectricity). When charged, one end becomes positive and the other negative, allowing it to attract, or repel, particles of dust or bits of paper. These gems are highly valued as electrical tuning circuits for conducting television and radio frequencies because of their durability. High frequencies pass through them without shattering, unlike many other crystals. Some black tourmaline are double terminated enhancing the linear flow of energy in both directions.

My first experience with double terminated black Tourmaline was at a gem show in Tucson. I was chatting with one of my favorite vendors who sells all natural stones.  After expressing how draining it was in the crowded rooms with bright lights, mix of energy and lots of people, she handed me a strand of double terminated black Tourmaline crystals and instructed me to just hold it and close my eyes.  Within a few minutes, my energy levels began to improve and I felt much more relaxed.  I felt completely recharged.  It was at that moment that I understood how powerful stone and crystal energy really is.
